As part of our Fish Rescue Spotlight series, we're highlighting rescues making a difference in the lives of fish. This month, we're featuring The Betta Garden, a Colorado-based rescue that takes in bettas, provides rehabilitation and care, and helps them find new homes.

Tell us about your rescue and how it got started?

When I was in high school I struggled a lot with mental health. I got a fish and it helped me a lot. Getting up to take care of my fish meant I had to take care of myself. In a way they saved me, so I’m just returning the favor ◡̈ I’m a newer rescue I’ve only been going for 3 months but so far we’ve successfully adopted out 4 bettas!

What types of fish do you usually take in?

My primary focus is on betta fish! Although with surrenders I do get a lot of tank mates like kuhli loaches, rasboras, snails, etc.

Where do the fish you rescue typically come from?

The bettas I rescue usually come from Facebook, Craigslist, Nextdoor, etc. Just people looking to rehome their bettas they can’t care for anymore or simply don’t want. A lot of the bettas I rescue usually are overweight and have fin rot from poor water conditions and improper food diet.

What are some of the biggest challenges your rescue faces?

Losing a fish and not being able to save them is always a big challenge. It’s extremely frustrating knowing it can be prevented. However, it does motivate me to save more because I know it’s only one betta out of thousands out there being mistreated!

Is there a rescue story that has stayed with you?

Definitely. I have gotten a lot of fish surrendered. Every time I can tell they care about the betta to some extent and they give me info and everything! However, I picked up two fish off the doorstep of a man’s house where they were being kept in old bleach containers. One of the fish had chemical burns, she’s still recovering right now!

How can people support your work?

I make content off of my fish rescues and about fish keeping in general so just following and supporting my content helps a lot!! :) And of course donating always helps, I dedicate a lot of money into this for medications. And I never turn down a rescue and have driven over an hour to get a fish before.
